16 suspected militants from the Boko Haram were short dead by the nigerian security force yesterday in the north easthern city of maiduguri.
withnesses say they were killed in a fierce gunfire that started around 4pm yesterday,civilians were hit by stray bullet in the fighting, which lasted for hours. the army said no sodier was killed.
There has been no comment so far from the boko haram group, the attack took place in maiduguri's district of lawan bukar.
After the fighting, Col Ebhaleme say troops had also seized weapons and
explosives during house-to-house searches.
Meanwhile, in a separate attack in the city of Kano, suspected Boko Haram
gunmen opened fire on Tuesday night, killing a retired policeman and two serving
officers.
The Nigerian government's effectiveness in fighting Boko Haram has been nominal, although the number of militants that are being captured or killed is on the rise. Now President Jonathan, who has tried both force and peaceful negotiations, might receive help from a Washington that is interested in quashing al-Qaida. Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns said on Monday that the U.S was "ready to explore a potential partnership with the Nigerian army to build its civil affairs capacity."
