The chilling prospect helped to convince Cruise’s wife Katie Holmes, 33, to divorce the movie superstar, who is 50 today.
Katie was spotted yesterday for the first time since her announcement. The glum-looking actress seemed keen to show she was NOT wearing a wedding ring.
She feared Cruise was about to send their six-year-old girl to the Sea Organisation — a hardcore group within the religious sect followed by the Top Gun star.
Kids chosen for induction into the cult are sent to secret military-style “boot camps”.
And clasping an “e-meter” that measures electrical currents in their bodies, like a lie detector, they are asked bizarre questions barked by a Scientology “ethics officer”.
The questions, from the “Children’s Security Check, Ages 6-12,” include:
Actress Katie, who is divorcing three times-wed Cruise to “save” Suri, was warned about the inquisition and Scientology’s “iron grip” by defectors from the cult.
They helped her to surprise Cruise by leaving the couple’s Beverly Hills home and moving into a New York apartment with the child.
Marc Headley, 39, who quit eight years ago after being recruited by the Sea Organisation at 16, said: “I was exposed to things I’ll never be able to erase from my mind. Our idea of what was happening in the real world was severely warped.
Cruise is said to be a leading supporter of the Sea Organisation, known as Sea Org. It was founded by sci-fi writer and Scientology creator L Ron Hubbard in 1968 and run on board boats.
It has since moved to land bases such as Scientology’s HQ at Gilman Hot Springs, California — and is an elite group of devotees signed up on billion-year contracts.
Marc said: “Most people stay in Sea Org for 30 years and lose all contact with all family and friends.
“These people don’t have licences, credit cards, money. I knew I had to fight my way out.
“I don’t even have a High School diploma and 90 per cent of the kids bought up in Sea Org don’t have any kind of education.
“The church uses that against you. They tell you, ‘If you leave you’ll be a cleaner or a tramp’.”
Katie — raised a Catholic — is seeking sole custody of Suri so she can control her upbringing.
Last night it was revealed her dad Martin, an Ohio-based divorce lawyer, has been instrumental in helping her to break free of Cruise and Scientology.
He flew to New York to “take control” days before his daughter told the world she was splitting from the Mission: Impossible star after five years of marriage.
Meanwhile Cruise looked stressed and scruffy as he headed for the set of new movie Oblivion, which he is filming in Iceland.
The usually immaculate actor was taken to a waiting helicopter from Reykjavik’s Hilton Hotel.
It had been rumoured pals including the Beckhams and Will Smith would join him in Iceland to help celebrate his birthday.
But it is thought the plans were scrapped after Katie’s bombshell.
Cruise has issued a rallying call to the cast and crew of the sci-fi movie, urging them to carry on as normal.
A source said: “Tom isn’t moping and is keen to crack on. He doesn’t want disruption in his personal life to affect filming.”
